At Kanzi, we often speak about providing children with food, education, shelter, and opportunities. These are essential foundations. Yet some of the most transformative moments in our work happen when an alumnus walks back through our doors.

There is something deeply powerful about a child seeing a successful adult who once shared their circumstances.

Children growing up in Kibera face immense challenges. Resources are often stretched, opportunities can seem scarce, and the future can feel uncertain. In such an environment, it is easy to think only about today. It is easy to believe that dreams belong to other people.

That is why mentorship sits at the heart of our work.

Recently, we welcomed former beneficiaries back to spend time with the children in our program. They shared their journeys, their struggles, their failures, and their successes. They spoke honestly about the decisions that shaped their lives and encouraged the younger generation to think beyond immediate circumstances.

For many of the children, these conversations were more than inspiring. They were tangible evidence that another future is possible.

Our alumni carry a unique credibility. They understand the realities our children face because they have lived them. Their stories demonstrate that education, discipline, resilience, and long-term thinking can create opportunities that once felt out of reach.

These visits also remind us that giving comes in many forms.

While financial contributions help us provide critical services, mentorship is equally valuable. A few hours spent listening, encouraging, advising, or sharing lessons learned can have a lasting impact on a young person’s confidence and aspirations.

Every person has something meaningful to offer. Your experiences. Your mistakes. Your professional expertise. Your encouragement. Your perspective. These are gifts that cannot be measured in monetary terms, yet they often shape lives in profound ways.

At Kanzi, we dream of a future where every child who passes through our program not only succeeds but returns to inspire the next generation. A future where hope is continually passed from one child to another, creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond our walls.

Because the true measure of success is not simply making it out. It is reaching back and helping someone else find their way forward.

And that is exactly what our alumni continue to do.
